At the first-ever Solarpunk Conference, Researcher and Editor, Sayan Chattopadhyay was an invited speaker in the Literature Panel, contributing to key discussions on the evolving role of science fiction in addressing climate realities, sustainance and the rise of solarpunk literature.
His work, Solarpunk and Sustainability: Imagining the Future through Science Fiction, outlined how the solarpunk genre is reshaping contemporary climate narratives by moving away from dominant dystopian frameworks toward more constructive, solution-oriented visions. He emphasized that solarpunk literature not only imagines futures powered by renewable energy and social equity but also pushes readers and scholars to consider how such visions can be translated into practical, real-world action.
During the session, he also addressed the challenges inherent in implementing solarpunk ideals, particularly the socio-political and economic complexities that accompany sustainable transitions. His intervention positioned literature as an active site of engagement, one that bridges speculative imagination with policy, community practices, and environmental responsibility.
The panel marked a significant step in foregrounding literary discourse within the broader solarpunk movement, reinforcing the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to sustainability and climate futures.
